Why Girls Should Learn Martial Arts

I’ve always been a pretty sporty kid. Whether it be playing soccer, basketball or baseball in the backyard, I was basically born sporty. When I was 5 years old, I started karate which  was probably one of the best things my dad could ever have done for me as it has played a huge role in shaping me into the person I am today. He knew the type of world this was for females and me learning martial arts was one way of helping me be able to combat it.

That being said, I’m a firm believer that all girls should learn how to fight and take up some form of martial arts for the following three reasons:

1. Self-defence

The blatantly obvious reason is for self-defence. Now before I go further, I think in order to prevent violence against women there needs to be a focus on teaching others how to respect women and so forth. However, if I had to be brutally honest, there are always going to be morons out there regardless. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Violence against women is still rife unfortunately and will continue to be regardless of what we do. Women have an inbuilt fear for their safety. Even if they don’t want to and even if they don’t mean to, everyone they see in the street is almost a threat.



2. Confidence and life skills

Martial arts can give you confidence in two ways. Firstly, in the obvious form that you can walk down the street with the knowledge that you are equipped with the skills that could ultimately save your life.

This then transpires to the other form of confidence- a self-esteem boosting confidence. When you feel strong and capable, you boost your self esteem. If you can handle yourself against potential attackers, then you can handle yourself against anything. It gives you a sense of positivity that you can face whatever life throws at you and you have the resilience to handle whatever obstacles you face. Moreover, when you train regularly, you become healthier and you feel happier with how you look. Learning a martial art will make you both physically and mentally stronger- if that’s not a reason in itself to start learning, then I don’t know what is.


3. Health

Martial arts is still a form of exercise at the end of the day. It’s a sport that works your whole body and you burn a tonne of calories in the process- a bonus for those looking to get in better shape. In saying that, scientists have said that when you exercise you release endorphins which makes you happier- a bonus for a healthy state of mind. In this day in age, having a healthy mind and body couldn’t be more important. Additionally, when you’re training at a club, you get to meet a heap of people, giving you a great opportunity to socialise and make new friends.


When you learn a martial art, not only do you learn self-defence, but you learn how to be healthy and fit. You learn how to be mentally tough and disciplined. You learn to become a better version of yourself.

So my message to you ladies (and gentlemen too), look up your local martial arts club and check it out. You never know where it could lead you.
